THE 4TH EDITION OF GREEN GHANA DAY CELEBRATION HELD ON FRIDAY 7TH JUNE, 2024 AT THE SDDA, KPEVE
INTRODUCTION
The South Dayi District Assembly joined the rest of the country to celebrate the 4th Green Ghana Day. The theme for this year’s event was “Growing for a Greener tomorrow”. The event was aimed at planting ten million (10,000,000) tree seedlings nationwide as part of the effort to green Ghana and mitigate the effect of climate change.
The program was graced by the District Co-ordinating Director (DCD) for SDDA, The District Agric Director , District Health Director (DHD), Kpeve Police Commander, Peki Police Commander, The District Crime Officer, Chief and Traditional leaders of Kpeve community, Honourable Assembly members,the clergy, staff of he District Assembly, staff of the District Education Directorate, students from the Kpeve Senior High School and Model Basic School.
PROGRAM PARTICIPATION
Before the commencement of the ceremony, the DCD Mr. John Kennedy Cobbah gave a warm welcome to all dignitaries who were able to make it to the memorable occasion and asked for their full participation to make the program a success.
The first tree planted on the day was done by the DCD, Health Director, Agric Director, Kpeve Police Commander, Peki Police Commander, District Crime Officer, Elected and Government Appointee Assembly Members, Information Service Officer, Staff from South Dayi District Assembly, Staff from Education directorate, teachers, students and other members followed with the tree planting.
REMARKS
The DCD remarked that trees were important to human survival so everyone should make it a habit to cultivate enough trees to reduce the negative impact of climatic change. He urged participants to nurture and maintain the trees being planted to achieve their intended objectives.
The Director of Agric for South Dayi District stated that between 2022 to 2024 the seedling distribution was as follows;
In 2022 , 9087 seedling was planted and 7,719 survived representing 85%
In 2023 , 1970 seedling was distributed and 1475 survived representing 75%.
This year, the district has received 2,000 seedlings to be distributed to various communities for planting. The breakdown is as follows; mahogany 750, teak 750, Elina arborea (snap Dragon tree) 250, ofram 250.
Conclusion
The Agric Department of South Dayi District (ADSDD) guided dignitaries for the event to plant two hundred (200) tree seedlings on the premises of the Assembly to mark the occasion and subsequently outlined the significance of trees of all to participants.
After the tree-planting ceremony, the DCD thanked all officers for their cordial participation and the importance they attached to afforestation of the South Dayi District and the country as a whole.
