On 21st March, 2024 held an event at the forecourt at the District Assembly to support some selected Persons with Disability (PWDs), marginalized and vulnerable in the society in the district.
The event which was organized by the Social Welfare Department and Community Development of the South Dayi District Assembly was graced by the District Chief Executive, Hon Godwin Dzadawa.
At the event, items estimated at GHC 45,760 which included ten refrigerators, fufu pounding machines and cassava gletters were received by PWDs. The donation formed part of the three percent (3%) share of the Assembly’s Common Fund to support the PWD’s. Also sixty four (64) wheelchairs was distributed to the PWDs, founded by World Bank.
In an introductory address by the head of Social Welfare Department at the South Dayi District Assembly, Mr. Philip Kokroko Newa, expressed gratitude to the government and world bank for funding the project and admonished the beneficiaries to use the items to improve their business and lives.
He explained that before the purchase of the items, a team of officials from the Assembly embarked on need-assessment of the PWDs in the Community to determine their specific requirements.
He noted that the activities of the beneficiaries would be strictly monitored to ensure that they did not abuse the assistance provided to them .
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Godwin Dadzawa in his speech thanked the Government of Ghana and World Bank for funding the project.
Addressing issues on persons with disabilities, he said the government has increased the amount to be given to the disabled to 3% in the district assembly’s common fund. The DCE closing his speech encouraged persons with disabilities to be entrepreneurial in their day to day activities in order to keep up with the pace of development in the district and in the country as a whole. He, therefore, urged them to take good care of the items and use them for the purposes for which they were intended, adding that a monitoring team would be detailed to ascertain how they would be using the items and monies given them.
Mr Kwame Atiase, a benefiary, expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana, World bank, DCE, Social Welfare Department and the South Dayi District Assembly for the gesture and pledged on behalf of the other beneficiaries to put the items provided them to good use.
