He further indicated that 27 students were registered for the BECE in Wudome D/A JHS in 2018 comprising of 16 boys and 11 girls.
According to Mr. Baako, no student had aggregate 6-15, only one girl had between aggregate 16-24 representing 9.0%. Various groups were formed to identify some of the causes of low performance in 2018 BECE.
The following were some of the causes:
- The use of mobile phones, music box and watching of TV in the evening.
- Students stay at night especially during funerals
- Lack of textbooks and other teaching learning materials
- Mass promotion to the next class where pupils/students are not repeated is a challenge.
- There is no good relationship between teachers and parents in the school.
- Parents do not supervise their children at home whether they sleep or not.
- Some Teachers used to send the students and when they returned, lessons are over.
- Boy and girl friend relationships.
- Boys in town also disturbs the girls.
- Free SHS system where aggregate 50+ are admitted is encouraging then not to learn.
- Lack of holiday classes.
- Removal or abolishing of corporal punishment from the school
- Teachers jokes with some student so they do not take them serious again.
- The use of internet and watching ‘’pono’’ films
- Parents gives them too much house chores which prevents them from learning at home.
The DCE Hon. Ernest Patrick K Mallet advised the pupils/students to learn and take their studies seriously so that the town, society and the country at large may benefit from them. He pledge the Assembly’s support for the schools to provide infrastructure where necessary.
He advised the Guidance and Counselors in the school to guide all the pupils especially those who need guidance.
Target was then set for 2019 BECE by the various groups:
(Boys/girls) Students – 95%
Male Parents – 75%
Female Parents – 95%
Teachers – 85%.
