NUTRITION ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN 2022

- GROWTH MONITORING AND PROMOTION
This is the regular measurement of a child’s size in order to determine whether the child is growing well or not. This session also offers the care givers the opportunity to know the weight and length of their children as well the opportunity to receive counselling on the growth of their children.
During this session children under 5years were
- Weighed
- Length and height were measured
- Care givers were counselled based on findings etc.
- GIRLS IRON-FOLATE TABLET SUPPLEMENTATION (GIFTS) OUT OF SCHOOL
The Girls Iron –Folate Tablet Supplementation programme is designed to provide weekly iron folic acid (IFA) supplement through schools, health facilities and other channels to adolescent between the ages of 10-19years of age with the aim of preventing anemia among adolescents. During the year 2022, the unit provided IFA tablet to 338 adolescents that are out of school, however, Counselling and sensitization is still ongoing at various service delivery point and in the community on the importance of IFA, iron rich foods and other iron inhibitors.
- NUTRITION FRIENDLY SCHOOL INITIATIVE
Nutrition friendly school initiative (NFSI) is a school – based health and nutrition program adopted as the platform on which to implement a set of school –based health and nutrition activities aimed at improving the school environment to make it more nutrition sensitive.
Additionally, schools are an ideal place for children to observe and learn about healthy eating and nutrition as they often eat at school or buy meals and snacks there.
The district was privileged to be part of the NFSI training and seven (7) schools and health staffs were trained in October 2021.The following schools were trained.
- Tsatee Presby Primary school.
- Kpeve Model Basic School.
- Adzokoe EP Primary.
- Tongor Agordeke D/A Basic School.
- Kpalime Duga D/A Basic School.
- GOVCO Demonstration School.
- Avetile Methodist Basic School.
Since the implementation of the NFSI, the following activities were carried out by the trained schools in 2022.
- Celebration of fruit and vegetable days
- Egg day celebration
- Physical activity
- Weekly iron folic acid IFA supplementation
- Promotion of school garden
4.0 COMMUNTY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRTION
Though the district has not been trained in CMAM, for the year 2022, the district also managed malnourished cases and the picture below shows the before and after management of cases. The children have recovered and are doing well.

- MONITORING OF SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMMES
During the year 2022, the unit visited schools on feeding to monitor their activities in the various schools. During this monitoring some of the activities undertaken include:
- Inspection of school manu
- Inspection of store rooms
- Physical inspection food items
- Observation of cooking
- Dishing out of food
- Educating school matrons on combing various food groups to provide nutritious meals
- Hygiene practices during and after cooking etc.
