SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME ON WORLD MENTRUAL HYGIENE DAY CELEBRATION ON 28TH MAY 2024
The management of South Dayi District Education Directorate in collaboration with the Health Directorate invited the department of Social Welfare to give a talk on child marriage and domestic violence to school pupils to mark the world menstrual hygiene day celebration.
The students were taken through what menstrual hygiene is and the importance of menstrual hygiene.
The Social Development Officer also took the students through child marriage and domestic violence due to the increasing number of cases on child marriage and domestic violence within the district.
Child marriage was defined as a marriage or domestic partnership formal or informal between a Child and another child and a Child and an Adult. The students were taken through some of the causes of child marriage, Poverty was seen as the number one cause of child marriage, other causes were fear of child not getting married in future and lack of education are also some causes of child marriage. Child marriage normally have some great consequences on the child and some of the effects are
1 Children being .depressed and having some emotional distress
- Children are always at a Higher-risk of pregnancy and child birth.
The students were asked to speak out whenever they are being forced to get marriage at that tender age and advised to take their studies serious to become better persons in future.
Domestic violence is one of the leading type of violence causing great damage on children and adult within the district and therefore the need to also address it for students to be aware of the danger it can have on them. The facilitator defined it as a type of violence that can be used to gain power or control over an intimate partner. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. The students were also taken through some forms of domestic violence, of which some are sexual abuse, child abuse, psychological violence throwing objects, slapping etc
The main types of violence are
- Physical violence
- Verbal violence
- Psychological violence
CONCLUSION
The facilitator made the student to understand the need to always read more and ask questions whenever there are issues bothering them. The students shared their views and experiences on both child marriage and domestic violence which made it interactive. They were also asked to report such cases to their teachers, police, any elderly person they trust and the Social Welfare Office.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, students were taken through what teenage pregnancy is, its causes, effects and its prevention.
Students were made to understand that, although there are many different ways to prevent a teenage girl from becoming pregnant, the only one that is absolutely effective is sexual abstinence.
