AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT OF SOUTH DAYI DISTRICT & M&B SEEDS AND AGRIC SERVICES (GH) LTD ORGANISED A DEMONSTRATION IN FARM YIELD (MAIZE)

A one-day field day demonstration for maize farmers from the Kpeve community was organized on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 by the Agriculture Department of the South Dayi District and M&B Seeds and Agric Services (Ghana) Limited at the Agric demonstration site on a 10m square farm plot.

The training is one of several initiatives that M&B Seeds and Agricultural Services Ghana Limited have already carried out as part of their commitment to the farmers they partner with.

Speaking at the demonstration site, Mr. Matthew Abotsi, Head of Crop Research (Agric Dept, SDD), emphasized the exercise’s main objective, which is to experiment with the five main varieties of maize sown three months ago with either organic fertilizer for Site A or unorganic fertilizer for Site B employed on both land and the outcome that will turn up.

He underlined that M&B seeds were able to generate an excellent outcome with both organic and non-organic fertilizers over the 91-day (May 2, 2023-August 9, 2023) period during which the kinds of maize were cultivated without rain. Considering that we are currently in the wet season, he expressed confidence that the yearly target of 60,000 metric tonnes for maize output will be surpassed.

The Quality Control Officer, Mr. Henry Etornam Ackah, advised the farmers that in order to increase productivity, they must do the following actions.

  1. allow 75 cm of space inside the seeds for more sunlight and air.
  2. One or two seeds placed in a hole to stop soil plants from competing with one another for nutrients.

iii. Utilize the appropriate fertilizer.

The South Dayi District Assembly and M&B Seeds and Agric Development were beseeched by Madam Peace Anyana, the best farmer for 2022, to provide fertilizers, agricultural input, seeds, and assistance from extension agents.

The majority of farmers were impressed by what they had seen throughout the seminar and pledged to use what they had learned to increase productivity.
