SOUTH DAYI DISTRICT ASSEMBLY MEMBERS FAIL TO ELECT PM
Newly inaugurated members of South Dayi District Assembly of the Volta Region, have failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after two rounds of voting.
The Presiding Member (PM) when elected would superintendent over the proceedings and discussions of the house on the progress and development issues of the assembly.
Three members contested for the position of Presiding Member, namely Hon. Windfred Nuku Afare (Peki Avetile West), Hon. Emmanuel Denu (Government Appointee) and Hon Wellington Elukpedzu (Peki Wudome).
The first round of voting ended with 16, 14 and 2 in favour of Hon. Windfred Nuku Afare, Hon. Olukpedzu Wellington and Hon Emmanuel Denu respectively.
The second round contest was limited to members namely, Hon. Windfred Nuku Afare and Hon. Wellington Elukpedzu.
By the end of the 2nd poll, the two contestants obtained 16 votes each, thereby falling short of the 2/3 requirement in line with the Section 17 of the Local Government Act 2016 (ACT 836).
None of the two candidates who contested were able to accumulate the required two thirds of the votes of the house, as stated by Section 17 of the Local Government Act 2016 (ACT 936) The District Electoral Officer, Ms Barbra Lartey said since the members failed to elect a Presiding Member they would have to reconvene within 10days as prescribed by law
Hon. Rockson Nelson Dekpemekpor , the MP for South Dayi expressed his dissactisfaction of the division in the House on political lines since it could hamper the development of the Assembly. He made the disclosure that each of the meeting the Assembly spent alot of money to organise and even with the current meeing that was convened he footed the entire bill because Assembly doesnt have money. He therefore pleaded with the House to get someone who is experience to handle the General Assembly issues.
A floor was opened to the House by the Acting Presiding Member the DCD of South Dayi District Assembly Mr. John Kennedy Cobbah for the Honourable members to express their concerns on the current issue on the floor.
Majority of Honourable members expressed dissactisfaction with the division in the House and prayed that the next time of meeting the House would get a unifier to unite the House.
A motion was moved for the closure of the meeting till further notice.
A total of 32 comprising 21 elected members , 10 government appointees ,the DCE are to vote to select a Presiding Member for the District with Two-thirds majority votes.
